why might the audience listen to the Archers? refer to U&G in you answer (12 marks)

Audiences listen to The Archers because it allows listeners in the audience who live in big town or cities, an escape into the countryside that they might not be able to get hold of in real life. This links into the entertainment as it allows they to escape reality and follow the life and dramas of other people. It appeals to the audience not only through the entertainment aspect from the drama but also through personal identity as the show can experience events that happen in real life and this allows the audience to connect with the show. The show engages with the audience through online interactions with other listeners, this happens via social media platforms such as twitter or facebooks, this links into the u&g of social interaction. This overall keeps the audience engages as it allows people to learn about real life events and how to deal with them, making it informative, but entertains the audience by using person identity and gives them topics to talk to which links to the last u&g of social interaction.

Exam questions and responses

notes
  • explain = full sentences
  • Ofcom regulates radio
  • commercial, community and public service broadcaster
Public service broadcaster radios are funded due to the licences fee that the public pay. However commercial radios are funded by adverts for other companies.

The archers is fit to informing through the highlighting of the current affairs in the world such as the coast of living crisis. This is seen in the archers when Micks living situation is brought up, he is struggling with money and is therefore living in his van in the pub car park. overall this links to the BBC remit because it links into one of the targets of informing their audience, it does this by keeping their audience informed with issues occurring in the world today.

The archers is also fit to educate through the realistic insight of what it is like to live in a small countryside village. An example of this is seen when we hear joy discussing the issues with the litter in the village and arranging how to solve the issue by litter picking as a community. This overall links into the BBC remit by educating their audience on what it is like to live other peoples lives and in different surroundings.
  • BBC radio 4 is where the archers is located
  • The target audience middle class, older, white women
The archers is aimed at its audience, as their target audience is middle age females. There fore they make their storylines some what of interest to their age category and gender. This is seen in the storylines of rural and domestic life, and definitely seen with the strong female characters.

Audiences listen to the archers because of the social interaction they can get from things such as fan pages and social media. An example of this is when for Helen, who is a character in the show, they raised £100k because of the story line she had. The audience started a hashtag called free Helen, and with this they all drank cups of tea and posted images on social media. Overall this involvement of many people who interacted by discussing the topic and sharing online is linked into the U&G theory.
